ANOTHER YEAR OLDER AND A THRIFTING I WILL GO...

Well we are only two weeks into the New Year already and I just can't beat some of my old habits....

It was my birthday earlier this week and I treated myself to a day off work and a lovely coffee and piece of cake from my favourite local bakers, Petite Patisserie, who provide all the refreshments and scrumptious cake for our Vintage Vogue Tea Room. It was definitely a treat and it took me ages to eat that cake, as you can imagine! It knocked spots off the disappointing visit last weekend to a new bakers not that far away, also based locally, I was absolutely horrified to be served coffee and cake in plastic - ugh, I will not be going back there again and it was more expensive as well!!!

The best thing about my local high street are the Charity Shops. Besides the usual necessities like bakers, post office, dry cleaners, shoe menders, chemist and grocery shops these stand out the most and there are more of them on every high street these days but they are my favourite shops and i love a bargain and of course donating my unwanted clothes and giving to charity by buying something back from them in the process is the best feeling in these hard times!

Today I was really excited when the lady in one of the shops said she had some more knitting patterns out the back. She came back with a carrier bag full and it was great to find so may old patterns in one place and at 50p each I just got carried away.

My scarf drawer also needed a good tidy up this weekend as I always get it in a mess as it's hard to find the scarf i want as I have so many. Today I decided to organise it a little better and you must agree this method makes it so much easier to find the scarf i want. There are more pictures of my scarves but i don't want to bore you too much, maybe another time.

Happy New Year to everyone!

I hope all my followers have had a great Christmas, full of rest, good cheer, fun and frivolity.

I have really been enjoying this well-earned rest from my day job. I have watched some great films on video and tv, favourite tv programme was Downton Abbey for obvious reasons, it's British Drama at its best and I don't think there has been anything else to attract my attention other than Miss Marple and Poirot.

Whilst watching the TV I sit and knit my sweaters. I have finally completed the double breasted tweed sweater as pictured in my previous post in a lovely wine tweed coloured wool, I wore it last Thursday when we visited the V&A post-modernism exhibition and we also hit the busiest shopping street in London - Oxford Street but that was only because we had to shop at John Lewis which has always been my favourite department store. Once upon a time I used to buy all my yarn and ribbon there but over the years the department has shrunk in size and choice but never mind, yesterday we were buying household items not haberdashery. We survived the trip and I was so glad to get home again.

The other morning I went shopping locally and popped into a couple of the charity shops. I managed to find a few knitting patterns as well as a couple of dressmaking patterns. One of the knitting patterns was a crossover cardigan, designed by the Royal Society of Arts for ballerinas. I only ever had a faded photocopy so now i have the original. I will share pictures another time.

Also featured is the fair isle sweater I started months ago but didn't quite finish off until New Years Eve. It came out a little smaller than I would have liked but it still fits me so my efforts were not in vain and at least I know for next time to knit it on larger needles. I hope you like it.

A Weekend of Knitting and Stitching

I was really glad I visited the Knitting and Stitching Show in Ally Pally on Saturday. As I was expecting, it was packed solid with ladies of all ages buying wool and all sorts of goodies relating to knitting and sewing. The only moan of the day was that there wasn't much room to move and the food was a bit lacking in choice and there were hardly enough seats to accommodate the thousands that visited.

Anyway, I came away with nice wool to knit a sweater or two. I just love tweed wool which will knit up into a lovely sweater like the 1950s style one pictured. I also found some really lovely fabric as pictured. I am not very good at dressmaking but I am one to have a go at anything so I will buy a nice 1940s blouse pattern and either have a go myself or ask someone to do make them for me (I guess it will be the latter).

It was great to see such enthusiasm for the Campaign - "Love Fashion Hate Sweatshops", I just had to buy one of their clothbags which I will carry with me wherever I go to spread the word..... I felt inspired by the creativity they were sharing with everyone, it's amazing what you can make out of old unwanted cloth and in fact anything that gets thrown away. There were also some great exhibitors showing off their creations one of which just caught my eye as shown in the picture above.

There were a few Magazine stands including one for Women's Weekly so I felt inspired to dig out some of my original 1950s knitting patterns as a homage to them celebrating 150 years since the start of their publication.

I am really looking forward to next year's show.

Vintage Vogue 2nd October was HOT HOT HOT!!!

If you were lucky enough to visit Vintage Vogue yesterday, whether you are a trader or a shopper you would have had a fabulous time just like we all did.

Despite the hot weather there were some relentless women that had waited a long time to buy some of my sweaters, maybe it's because the weather forecast for this month is heavy snow. As I sold so many I will need to be busy knitting for the next Fair in April 2012.

Wool Glorious Wool

From no blogging to lot of blogging, I have been busy behind the scenes, working hard to produce some wonderful sweaters in time for Vintage Vogue on 2nd October.

To get me really organised I had a wool shelf built at home, as I had bags of wool stacked against the wool in the bedroom, it really wasn't very pretty and I could not remember what wool I had. As you can see, my wool looks so much nicer out in the open, on show in all it's glorious colour.

I have just finished knitting a sweater for a nice lady in New York which is a pretty little 1950s sweater, one of my favourite designs and such a pleasure to knit. I love the vintage buckle and the turret pattern around the neckline and bottom.

On a 1950s theme, I have also been knitting some 1950s windcheaters, the pattern I have featured previously, I will have three of these to sell, all in different colourways. My favourite is a red and grey one as above. I am also knitting one for me to wear at the Fair.

I am looking forward to this weekend as we are going to Ramsey on Sunday which should be a really nice day out and a day for catching up with friends and traders that we know.

The 12.35 train from Paddington

Hi everyone

Well, I haven't been blogging just lately but it doesn't mean that i haven't been doing anything in my life, it just means I spend most of my time doing stuff.

Last month Stephen and I took a short break to Paris on the Eurostar from Paddington, I must admit it was quite exciting and just as much fun as flying but a lot less stressful and comfortable.

We stayed close to the Financial District behind Printemps the Department Store. Our hotel was Hotel Opera D'Antin which was part of the Best Western chain but it was a small independently owned boutique hotel with a definite art deco feel, in so far as our toilet had an art deco cabinet in the room, a little odd but quirky I suppose.

Now considering I haven't been to Paris for about 25 years it was like being there for the first time. As it was July it was full of tourists, just like us, so we tried to do as little touristy things as possible just to keep away from the masses, which is a little bit difficult if you want to see the Eiffel Tower and visit The Louvre. We found a great place to eat Macaroons without having to queue up for them and it was so relaxing, we recommend you visit.

If any of you are thinking of visiting soon, do make sure you check out a great Vintage Fair that we came across just by accident surfing the net before we left the UK. We met some really nice people there and I think most of them go to Rhythm Riot every November, including Batman, the DJ. It was so nice to go to a French Fair just to see how they do it in France, very similar to us over here actually but more laid-back.

We met a lovely lady and visited her shop Retro Chic. It was such a lovely sunny day when we went to visit her so we sat outside the Cafe next door.

Now my only shopping extravagance was a pair of navy/white shoes which look a little like golfing shoes, they we made in Italy but a French design. I might post a picture of them in another blog post soon, with me wearing them.

We also were very impressed by some buskers playing gypsy jazz in Montmartre , this simply made our trip more enjoyable.

I took enough change of clothing with me as I wanted to look Tres Chic whilst I was there but was most surprised at the glances we were receiving because we were dressed in Vintage/Retro clothing as I don't think it's quite caught on yet in Paris, very surprising considering back in the 1950s Paris was THE fashion centre of the World.

Well Paris is just a distant memory now but one day we may return.....never say never!

Spring and Weddings are back in fashion just like Vintage Knitwear

Well I have certainly been busy these past few weeks....

I have all but knitted my fair isle 1940s sweater in maroon and grey and it just about fits me - wishing it was slightly longer in the body and that I hadn't followed the pattern truly as I went smaller on my needles where the fair isle is and wish i hadn't - oh well, a lesson learnt for next time. Pictures of the finished sweater will follow in a later post.

Today I had my hair cut and spent most of my morning scouring charity shops only to find an old P&B knitting booklet and a bio book about Garbo.

Now I am knitting another 50s cardigan two-toned in navy and grey which will form part of my collection at our October Fair. I also bought a nice late 30s/early 40s knitting pattern from Etsy, it's only a pdf but for £1.36 it's a bargain. I am not sure if I would knit it with the big bow as it detracts from the button detail and buckle but it's certainly interesting so I will knit it at some point in the near future. I am also planning to knit my first mens sweater which will be on sale in October if Stephen doesn't get his way..... As you can see from the pattern above, it's very 50s but oh so stylish.

As the weather is warming up quite nicely I have been undertaking some 1950s dirndl skirt alterations so I can wear them this summer they were a bit on the large size for me but I manage to alter them so they fit me. I might also finish an old old project to make some 40s style trousers in dark brown gaberdine, they are really wide and the fabric is very heavy so they will hand well. You wouldn't believe that I actually started the project some 2 years ago, if not more. Yes I know, it's been a while but the knitting does take priority and the sewing I just fit in when I am in the mood to get my sewing machine out of it's box.

Well the theme most recently has been Weddings and we were guests at Stephen's niece's wedding on the Sunday. I wore my "Jonathan Logan" dress again (as seen above with my very "chap" looking husband) as i thought it was appropriate wedding attire. It's quite a tight dress but as it's truly upholstered and being vintage, very well-made, it really held up for the day. The bride looked gorgeous and the bride's mum was looking very smart in her hand-made "50s" style dress and jacket.

That's it now, back to the knitting and planning my summer wardrobe and looking forward to the next Vintage Vogue Fair on 2 October. Our April event was a big success with over 750 people visiting as you can see me above with Rayna. I managed to do some shopping and I bought a lovely 50s evening dress with a full skirt and an interesting jacket and dress for a bargain price.

V FOR VINTAGE THIS SUNDAY 10 APRIL

Hi everyone

For one show only, I will be dressing up in true Vintage Style for Spring so you will not see me in jeans and a sweater. This Sunday I will be shopping for vintage instead of trading.

Well this is good news for everyone as it means I will have more sweaters on my Stand for the October Fair. This time of year most of you are thinking about Spring and Summer wear rather than sweaters and lets hope the summer brings with it good weather as it will cheer us all up!

If you are wondering what I have been knitting recently, I will share the picture of it with you very soon. The sweater itself is from a 1940s pattern and I have already knitted half the back, both sleeves and in the process of knitting the front, can't wait to get to the fair isle pattern as it will look really lovely when it's completed and I will be either wearing it or showing it on my stand in October.

Right now I am getting ready to Vogue so I will be blogging again very soon.

Valentine Day at Claridges

Well, the 14th February was our 9th Wedding Anniversary. We are such romantics, and there was no finer place than Claridges for Afternoon Tea to bring a taste of Vintage chic and romance to the occasion. Claridges is one of our favourite Hotels in London as it's so Art Deco and the Reception area is quite classic by design.

It was the day after the BAFTAs so we thought we might spot a few celebrities and we saw Rosamund Pike, as she was leaving the Tea Room.

Well, as you can see from the photos we had a superb time, whiling away the afternoon, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. I could spend every afternoon doing this kind of thing...maybe in my next life!!

I was saving my red and grey bow sweater especially for this occasion as it was so fitting for Valentines. There were so many red roses in the Tea Room and in Reception area, it was obvious what day it was....

Life Magazine November 1941

I love this cover of Life Magazine, November issue 1941. This girl looks like she is really enjoying herself but making sure she doesn't drop any stitches along the way. I wonder if she actually knits or she was just posing for the photo as she looks as if she's dropped a few stitches already and is holding the needles rather awkwardly? Anyway, I thought I would share this image with you as I think it's really lovely. I wouldn't mind having a copy of this issue myself as I would imagine there's a great sweater pattern inside.

Happy New Year everyone!

Well, I have taken myself away from the knitting needles just to update you on some fab news.

My bow sweater was recently featured on Ration Book Britain series on Yesterday channel, modelled by "Envy Greene" who is a regular visitor to Vintage Vogue and she modelled the sweater very well indeed.

Also, a nice lady called Adrienne recently interviewed me for Let's Knit Magazine and you will find the article on the last page of the February edition which hit the shops this weekend - image is shown above. At last some recognition of my passion for knitting.

Well, I am busy right now knitting some sweaters for the April 10th Fair. I am in love with the 50s windcheater cardigan which I am knitting in red and dark grey contrast you can see a picture of the original here.

So life is pretty hectic right now but it's the knitting that I enjoy the most.

CHRISTMAS IS COMING......AND VINTAGE VOGUE WAS A HUGE SUCCESS

Hi everyone!

Life has been a bit stressful of late.....our home improvements ie kitchen/dining room and bathroom projects have taken longer than we imagined and we are looking forward to most of it being finished off in time for Christmas. Make do and Mend and Stay Calm and Carry On have certainly been the theme for the last few weeks and we have survived it all. We are looking forward to entertaining our parents on Christmas Day!

I have been busy knitting at every available opportunity but it's been a struggle to say the least. I am glad to say we had a successful day at Vintage Vogue on Sunday 5th December and I sold some sweaters. I still have a couple of designs left, including the 1950s shawl-collared sweater in two colours, denim blue and kingfisher blue (as per the one above), both with matching cap and a 1950s off-the-shoulder sweater perfect for the party season as well as a bow sweater in royal blue and grey.

I will continue knitting sweaters to order and will knit some one-offs ready for the next Vintage Vogue on Sunday 10th April 2011 at which time I should have quite a few to sell so do watch this space.

All sweaters are one-offs so if you are looking for something a bit different and want to bring a bit of vintage style to your spring/autumn/winter wardrobe then look no further than Michele's Vintage Knitwear.

Murder Mystery and Mayhem in Torquay

Hi everyone,

Well, our holiday in Torquay is now a fading memory but it was certainly more fun that we had imagined. The reason for our visit was The Agatha Christie Week, every year for the past 4 years (I think) the Torquay Tourist Board have encouraged the locals to organise events and all sorts of Agatha themed events for the week of the anniversary of her birthday. We were so excited about staying at "The Grand Hotel" which is where she spent her honeymoon with her first husband.

We met lots of interesting people, including a couple from German TV who interviewed us outside the Tourist Information Shop and also Lucy Mangan, from The Guardian, who was very interested in the way that we dressed. It was a pity there were not more of us - Torquay probably isn't ready for an invasion of 40s enthusiasts just yet but when they start arriving in their droves (it could happen) they had better get ready for it.

Anyway, we made sure we attended the Agatha Christie Mile Walk with lovely Joan Nott who is the best Blue Badge Guide for Torquay. She made it so interesting and she was also a close friend of Agatha's daughter, Rosalind so she had lots of knowledge about this famous lady, but obviously she couldn't give much away as there is strict control over the legacy as we noticed as we went to the local Museum - no photos were allowed at the Agatha Christie Exhibition though most of the photos and details can be found in her autobiography anyway. This just makes it all the more intriguing.

We went to the Theatre to see "Witness for the Prosecution" which was really good and the twist at the end was very unexpected as I haven't seen the film or read the book - as you know, I don't read I just knit!

We met Julia Mackenzie at our Hotel for the birthday celebrations and fireworks on the Wednesday evening, the fireworks were amazing. Unfortunately I didn't feel that great though I was wearing my vintage 1950s evening dress (emerald green) with evening gloves, stockings and pearls to top it off and we didn't even get any photos taken, except from some visiting tourists, never mind!!!

The following day we took a Vintage Bus ride to Greenway, which was Agatha's summer house, it was really lovely and full of interesting artefacts and ethemera that was originally owned by the family. The setting was picturesque too, right by the River Dart. We were stuck for time so we didn't really have time to explore all the grounds but maybe next time. You can see a picture of me standing outside Greenway and the Vintage Bus wearing my 40s bow sweater. Surprisingly, we met one of the main actresses from the play at the local theatre and she asked us if we wanted to be extras as it was set in 1950s and we looked the part ie came with our own wardrobe. We thought it was an opportunity not to miss, besides what else would we be doing on our final evening in Torquay besides stuffing our faces in some local restaurant.

So our last day arrived and we went to Babbacombe for the Cliff Lift and took in some local touristy things and some cream tea. It was great to see some birds having a feast as you can see from the picture... I wore my zigzag sweater that day as it was keeping me warm. Here is a picture of me on Babbacombe beach.

Come evening, we were rushing around getting ready for our theatre finale, we got there just slightly late but then everyone else did so that wasn't so bad. I wore a 1950s maroon suit and Stephen dressed up in his usual 50s smart attire. The other extras/actors from the area loved our clothes and it was great fun getting involved behind the scenes. We were in the public gallery in this court drama and as we had already seen the play we knew what to expect. We loved every part of the evening and could do it all again. We sat and had drinks with some of the cast after the show and are truly grateful to ..... for giving us the opportunity to have a go. It really made our week in Torquay.

Busy Bee

Hi everyone

Well, I don't get time to blog, as you know, working full time, running a Fair and knitting doesn't always mean I have time to sit and blog, if only I was a lady of leisure then I would probably blog on a daily basis, what a lovely thought!!

Anyway, I am busy preparing for my stand in September, two sweaters are 2/3rds completed, so not long to go, still wondering if I would have the time to knit another before then but I think that's being too optimistic!

I am knitting the bows for my latest sweater and it's so important to get things right when sewing up otherwise the sweaters will look simply rubbish!

3 sweaters are now work in progress (decided to knit a 3rd) so some challenging days ahead of me to get them all finished in time.

Today is Sunday so apart from all the boring chores a housewife needs to do, I shall get some more knitting completed.

So for my stand my colour theme is violet and blue with a hint of grey - can't wait to see the sweater all together.

I will be selling some of my designs as well....as Autumn is getting closer and closer, it's a good time to start planning that winter wardrobe.

My sweaters will compliment any outfit - daytime or evening. So here is a glimpse of what you will be seeing on 5 Sept.

V V FOR VICTORY

Hi everyone,

Well, after a very busy weekend preparing for and hosting Vintage Vogue, it's back to my knitting.

It was lovely to see some of you again and of course one of my regular customers managed to bag herself a lovely sweater. I am also knitting another rainbow sweater for one of my waiting list customers and preparing for the 5 September fair so there's no stopping me at the moment.

Getting back to last Sunday, my stand was decked out with bunting and featured some red, white and blue sweaters. Here are a couple of those on display.

Stephen and I managed to get a photo done together, though not one of our best I must say, probably due to lack of sleep that weekend, but at least you can see me wearing another one of my rainbow sweaters in a slightly different colour-way.

If you were one of the lucky ones who managed to hit the Vogue Tea Room you would have seen our new Nippy waiting to greet you at the bottom of the stairs - none other than Jitterbug Doll, Miss Amanda Lee. She was indeed our lucky charm for the day and certainly didn't lack charm, that's for sure!!!

Well, it's back to my knitting and I am excited about two other sweater designs that I would like to add to my stand at the next fair - one of them is a lovely 1950s evening top with contrast stripe and bow, off the shoulder, the other one is a 1940s sweater with stripe and bow features. I am thinking Navy and Emerald Green as the colour scheme at the next fair.......

Vintage Vogue Fair - Sunday 6th June

Hi everyone,

Don't forget to pop down to see me at Brentwood in Essex next Sunday where you will find me selling my sweaters at the next Essex Vintage Fashion Fair.

As it's the 65th D-Day anniversary, it's time to celebrate in style. My stand will have a theme to it, 3 guesses which colours my sweaters will be??? My hands have certainly been busy this time around.

I will be selling all the usual knitting ethemera, some knitting patterns, bakelite wool holders and knick-knacks as well including some lovely fashion books that I have found.

We have some great things in store for our visitors, not only can you buy the vintage clothes, have your hair/make-up retro styled, you can then have a wonderful picture taken by Terry Mendoza who's a fantastic Retro Photographer that you may or may not have heard of. He's very well known on the 40s/50s scene. We are very excited about it.

Don't forget to enter our competition on the day to win £200 in vouchers to spend on any stalls of your choosing at the next Fair in September.

The Beach Trip

Hi folks,

Whilst early May was undecidedly cold and dreary, at the first sight of a sunny Sunday evening I thought it would be fun to get a shot of me wearing one of my handknitted 1950s sweater and matching hat on the beach, so we took a ride down to sunny and very chilly Shoeburyness. I thought this hut was the nicest and complimented the sweater and my vintage jacket (which is part of a skirt suit) which was a Christmas present from Stephen, which he purchased from Revolver in Colchester, who are also going to be returning to "Vintage Vogue" on the 6th June.

My jeans are from Freddies of Pinewood and the tassell loafers are from Russell & Bromley on the High Street.

Oh what a lovely Fair!!!!

Well, what a day we had on the 28th March!!!

It was so busy, I didn't even get time to look around at all the wonderful things on sale that day.

Having finally recovered, I now back on track knitting my orders. I am knitting a lovely rainbow sweater for one of our competition winners last year and I think she's going to be glad she waited patiently as all things good come to those that are patient.

Being addicted to vintage knitting means that you are always wanting to knit the next design. I have been looking through some of my vintage pattern books and have spotted a lovely sailor-type collared sweater that I just can't wait to knit. As my favourite colour is blue I think I will definitely knit one in blue and white, maybe a denim blue would be nice. It's definitely next on my agenda, in fact, I am itching to get the pattern out this evening and may even start it.

Anyway, so as not to bore you all with my knitting passion, I have posted some pictures from the Fair.

If you were lucky enough to come along for the day, I hope you were patient enough to wait in line for a fabulous treat in our Vogue Tea Room. The cakes looked fabulous and I am promising myself a visit at the next Fair on 6th June.

Vintage Vogue Fair - Sunday 28th March

Hi Folks

Don't forget to drop by and say hello at this Sunday's Vintage Vogue.

It's going to be a fabulous day out for everyone, with our new Vogue Tea Room and our lovely Nippys and lots more stands, some great exhibitors, some familiar, some new ones just to keep things fresh.

Hi Ladies

This is one of my favourite designs of sweater. Sadly I don't have any for myself but would love to knit one eventually.

My favourite pin up girl - Miss Amanda Lee was very pleased to receive one as a thank you from Atomic Events for her letting us use her image on our December 2009 flyers.

I think you will all agree, Amanda looks really swell in this lovely sweater in a shade of raspberry pink.
